The paludamentum and the tunic (dress worn by Roman officers in time of peace) testify that the statue represents a soldier of high rank, a patrician or a senator who, together with the other knight (of which there remains only a few fragments), must have accomplished many military assignments. The raised right arm should be considered as a " sign of peace " and not of salute, since the hand is not in an higher position than the head.
